Description
Introduction It seems humans have always lived in a universe of images (Angelotti&Letcher, 2009), and have expressed those images over time through increasingly complex ways. Philosophy and communication studies describe "mental image" as the representation of an idea in one's mind. Attention to visual data has deep historical roots, specifically in anthropology and sociology. As far back as the 16th century, Roger Bacon stated that observable data served as the basis of our knowledge (Harper, 2000). In this paper, we will present some perspectives about mental images (or visual data) from a variety of content disciplines, and then discuss the relevance of those perspectives to science education.
